I have realized that I have been a sugar junkie since childhood. I have also realized that I am not alone; many others share the sugar addiction.

Understanding Sugar Consumption In Today’s World

Sugar was also meant to be just a treat but not a substance we would eat daily. For some people, sugar is one of the main things they eat daily.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that an adult should aim to consume about 25 grams of sugar per day, assuming they are on a standard 2,000-calorie diet. To put this in perspective, a single can of Coke contains 44 grams of sugar, nearly double the recommended intake.

You might be startled to realize that your daily sugar consumption probably exceeds the recommended limit unless you carefully watch your diet. And even if you are watching your sugar intake, so much sugar is hidden in all kinds of food.

The average American consumes around 71.14 grams (or 17 teaspoons) of sugar per day, more than three times the recommended intake by WHO. The blame partly rests on the numerous tempting sugary food options, some of which can even deceive health-conscious consumers.

For instance, a single cup of Dannon Low-Fat Vanilla Yogurt packs 34 grams of sugar, while Vitamin Water contains 17 grams. Many considered these a healthier option than a regular Snickers Bar with 27 grams of sugar.

The Addictive Nature Of Sugar

Sugar is known to be a highly addictive substance. Many compare the addiction of sugar to cocaine.

Comparing sugar to cocaine might seem excessive, but research suggests that they share similar addictive properties, although the effects of sugar are far less dramatic. Sugar can induce a burst of energy and a short-term high in the body, linked to the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward.

This process is similar to the one triggered by addictive substances like drugs and alcohol. However, the long-term health effects of overindulging in sugar, like obesity and diabetes, are concerning.

This notion of sugar addiction is not merely theoretical but backed by scientific research. An animal study published in the Journal of Nutritional Neuroscience titled “Implications of an animal model of sugar addiction, withdrawal and relapse for Human health.” demonstrated the effects of intermittent sugar administration on a group of rats.

Over time, sugar administration was linked to weight gain, obesity, and Type II diabetes. This study concluded that the effects of sugar addiction, withdrawal, and relapse bear similarities to those of drugs of abuse.

It also helps to explain why sugar or kicking the sugar habit can be so difficult for so many people – myself included.
