If you have just eaten a meal filled with sugar, you may feel sluggish and suddenly find that your body has too much sugar.

When you eat something sugary, sugar will stay in your system for a few hours; this is because your sugar will then spike and then go down again for a certain period; if you want to get sugar entirely out of your body, then you need to go on a sugar detox which can take between three and 3 to 4 weeks to get the sugar out of your body.

How Long Sugar Stays In Your System Explained

Sugar can affect your body in many different ways. Not everyone will be affected by sugar in the same way.

Sugar will stay in this system for 1 to 4 hours for most people. How long depends on your body and how much sugar you eat.

Eating sugar affects our blood glucose level. How well our body functions with the blood glucose can determine how long sugar will stay in our system.

Understanding Blood Glucose Levels And Our Body

When we eat a meal, and especially if we eat a lot of sugar with our meal, our blood sugar levels will fluctuate. Depending on the foods you ate, if they were sugary and processed, you could see a dramatic spike in your blood glucose levels.

How much these glucose changes depend on many other factors, particularly if you have underlying health problems like diabetes. If you have diabetes or are pre-diabetic, your blood glucose levels could swing and change wildly after each meal.

The type of swing in your blood glucose levels has the name that is called postprandial blood sugar.

What Postprandial Blood Sugar Means

The term Postprandial Blood Sugar means your blood sugar after you have eaten. Your blood sugar will go up after eating, but if you eat healthily, this will not be a vast or noticeable spike.

For most people, when they have eaten, their blood sugar will start to inch up about 15 minutes after they eat. The highest spike usually comes 1 hour after a meal.

So if you had a candy bar and other sweets, the spike you felt could last for hours before your blood glucose returns to normal. That is why after you eat, sometimes sugary foods, it may feel good after you have eaten it, but later, you may feel quite crappy or not very good.

Depending on how much sugar you have eaten, most doctors think it can take 3 hours or even more for your blood glucose to return to normal.

How To Get Your Blood Sugar Back To Normal?

If you do not eat foods high in sugar and stay on a keto and low-carb diet, you do not need to worry about your blood sugar returning to normal. The keto and low-carb diets are fantastic; they do not increase your insulin or blood sugar levels.

Eating foods high in sugar, starches, and high-fructose corn syrup will spike your blood sugar level. Corn syrup is nasty as it quickly enters your bloodstream and spikes your blood glucose levels.

You can develop insulin resistance if you continue to eat many sugar foods, including high fructose corn syrup. Eating too many sugary foods can cause you to become more susceptible to diseases such as Type 2 diabetes.

Fruits with natural sugar can spike your insulin levels but will not spike your blood sugar levels as much as sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.

Cleaning Sugar Out Of Your Body Takes Time

If you have been eating sugar, totally getting sugar out of your system takes time. It will not take just a few hours.

Getting sugar out of your body is not the same as getting sugar out of your system. Sugar will leave your system in a few hours, but getting sugar out of your body can take 3 to 4 weeks.

To get the sugar out of your body, you must undergo a sugar detox. The sugar detox would mean that you do not eat sugar for that amount of time.

Going On A Sugar Detox

You can undergo a sugar detox to get sugar out of your body. Here is how you can go on a sugar detox to clear sugar out of your system:

  1. Cut out all sugars from your diet. We recommend cutting out all sugary foods, fruit, and any foods with sugar. This can also include diet sodas or soft drinks. Make water your drink of choice.
  2. Eat mainly meat, vegetables, and fats. In other words, eat a Keto and low-carb diet.
  3. Check that your foods have no added sugars, such as sauces and other things.

When you are on a sugar detox, the main point is that you do not eat any sugars, including added sugars.

Being on a sugar detox is very much like being on a keto and low-carb diet, which means you should not also eat any snacks but try to eat only homemade healthy food.
