What Happens If You Eat Too Much Cheese On Keto?

Post Date – Update:

One of the perks of being on a keto diet is that cheese is allowed, especially if you are a cheese lover. But like anything good thing, your cheese intake should be moderated.

Cheese can be eaten on a keto diet, but it should be used as a flavoring, not the main course. If you overeat cheese, it could affect your weight loss. Some people have a hard time handling a lot of cheese. When on a Keto Diet, we recommend looking at cheese as a way to flavor your food and not as the main course for your keto meal.

When Is Too Much Cheese Too Much On Keto?

Cheese is one of those delicious foods allowed on a keto diet. Not only is it allowed on your keto diet, but it is also encouraged.

But when is it too much? Or when are you eating just way too much cheese that you are hurting your keto diet?

You need first to remember this principle about a keto diet. A keto diet is about getting enough protein with vegetables and adding fat for the flavor. In other words, protein is one of the essential parts of the diet, along with low-carb approved vegetables, and fat or cheeses, butter, and other foods are added for flavor.

When you eat more protein, you are not so hungry, and you will not be tempted to eat so many sweets or other high-carbohydrate foods.

Keto Diet Rule For Meals:
Pick your protein + Add your low carb vegetable + Add your choice of Fat (cheese, butter, cream, nuts, etc) for flavor.

This rule shows that protein is essential, as are your vegetables. The fat, which includes cheese, cream, mayonnaise, and other approved fats, is added to the meal for a flavorful dinner.

The main ingredients are not cheese but protein. Even though cheese has protein, it is considered more as a snack for Keto or as a way to add flavor to your food and not the central part of your meal.

There is no hard fast rule on when too much cheese on Keto is too much as individual bodies will handle cheese differently. If I overeat cheese, I can get a tummy ache or bloating and gas.

Other people can eat a lot of chees without any side effects, and for some people, their bodies can hardly handle any cheese. But what is most important is knowing what your body can take and using cheese as a snack or a way to flavor your food, not as the main dish or course.

Why Is Cheese Allowed On Keto?

After so many years of following a low-fat diet, it can seem strange now that suddenly we are told we can eat cheese; people wonder why cheese is allowed on a keto diet.

Cheese is allowed on a keto diet because cheese is high in fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbs. Most cheeses are okay to eat on a keto diet, including but not limited to:

  • Cheddar
  • Brie
  • Mozzarella
  • Swiss
  • Goat Cheese
  • Provolone
  • Parmesan
  • Blue Cheese
  • Gouda Cheese
  • Ricotta cheese
  • Cottage cheese (high-fat kind)

But like our cheese that is good to eat on Keto, there are some you should avoid:

  • Canned cheese
  • Low-Fat Cheeses
  • All kinds of processed cheese
  • Cheese with sweet or sugars is added as cottage cheese with a flavoring.

You can see from the list that those you eat are much more than those cheeses you cannot. The ones you should avoid are mainly processed, canned, or low-fat cheese, which has addictives and other things added to it, making it less healthy than regular cheeses.

Some people add cottage cheese to the cheeses you should not eat as they are not the best cheese for a keto diet. But my nutritionist told me that I can eat cottage cheese but should be sure to make sure it is not the low-fat variety or the cottage cheese that has other things added in them as flavoring and sugar.

Best Ways To Use Cheese On Your Keto Diet

Like anything else, you do not want to use too much cheese on your keto diet so that it affects you or your weight loss. Here are some of the best ways we feel that cheese can be used as part of a Keto diet:

  • Use Cheese To Flavor Vegetables – Use the cheese to flavor some of your vegetables, as your asparagus is green beans. We’d love to put Parmesan cheese on top of our vegetables and some salt and pepper. We feel that’s just getting extra flavor to the vegetables.
  • Put Cheese In Your Salads – We love to add cheese to our salads. You can even mix the cheeses and put a variety of cheeses on your salad.
  • Make Keto Pizza – Cheese is excellent to put on top of your keto pizza. We even use mozzarella cheese and almond flour to make a delicious keto cheese pizza crust.
  • Add To A Recipe – There are so many great keto recipes that you can make with cheese. Whether it is to create a keto lasagna or make some Mexican keto food, for all of our recipes, you can use a variety of cheeses just like you would if it was not a keto dish. And you can use Almond flour and other keto-friendly foods to make the noodles.

If you are looking for a keto recipe with cheese in it, we suggest that you consider getting a membership to the DietDoctor website. The DietDoctor has a lot of great keto recipes, and many of these recipes call for some cheese.
