Some people think that it’s only those who struggle with weight that is addicted to sugar. They make this assumption because they believe that if you are obese and eating sugar, you are a sugar addict.

You can be thin and still be addicted to sugar. Sugar addiction is a behavioral issue and is not about the weight shown on the scale. Many people addicted to sugar also suffer from obesity due to overconsumption of sugary and sweet foods.

Many people think that only those who are obese or struggle with weight are addicted to sugar. Being a sugar addict has a lot more to do with behavior and how much sugar you consume than it has to do with your weight.

There can be many reasons why someone may not be overweight and still be addicted to sugar. It could be that they may exercise a lot to compensate for their eating sugar or sugar addiction.

When I was in college, friends and I would go out and run 8 to 14 miles regularly. .But at the same time, we would go down to the local pizza place that had an all-you-can-eat buffet and just gorgeous selves until we were so sick we could hardly walk home. We did this because we were addicted to sugar and this pizza place had some great desserts.

We were not overweight. In fact, at that time, I was pretty thin. But that was more because of the intense exercise I was doing on other days of the week that helped compensate for the sugar addiction.

Questions To Ask Yourself To See If You Have A Sugar Addiction

It is estimated that three out of every four people in the United States have some form of sugar addiction. For many, it may just be a mild form; for others, it may be much more severe.

Being addicted to sugar does not just need to be a sugary treat such as candy or your favorite donut. It can also be being addicted to sugary drinks such as coffee and tea with lots of cream and sugar or sugary sodas. All of these sugary foods can also be a sign of sugar addiction.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to see whether or not you might be suffering from sugar addiction. Understanding whether or not you have a sugar addiction is very personal. But if you are trying to be on a keto and low-carb diet, it can help you to understand why you should cut out sugar in your life.

  • Have you ever tried to stop eating sugar, but you just found that you couldn’t?
  • Do you constantly think about sugary foods or your weight?
  • Do you find it can be challenging for you to be able to stick to any diet?
  • Do you suddenly go into a store and see a candy bar or another sugary treat you must have, even though you know it’s not good for you?
  • Do you find that you’ve been on food, and then to compensate for overeating, you force vomit, over-exercise, do laxatives, or try other forms of purging the food out of your body?
  • Do you eat differently in front of people than when you are alone?
  • Has a doctor, friend, or even a family member approached you about the concern about your eating and your weight, and then you have become very angry or defensive?
  • Do you eat large amounts of sugary foods at one time?
  • Would you rather eat something sugary than eat healthy food?
  • Will you go out of your way to be able to buy or purchase your favorite sugary treats?
  • Do you eat sugary food to be able to escape from some of your feelings?
  • Do you eat when you’re not even hungry?
  • Do you find that you need some sugary boost in the form of a drink like coffee or something else to help you start and get through the day?
  • Do you lie to people about how much sugar you have just eaten?
  • Have you ever gone into the garbage to find some discarded sugary treat you threw away?
  • Are you happy to eat sugar or candy even if you know it dropped on the floor as you dare not waste it?
  • Do you feel hopeless about your relationship with sugary foods?
  • Have you ever stolen sugar foods from others (hoping they will not notice)?
  • Do you look forward all day to having a particular sugary treat?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you have a sugar addiction. If you answered yes to most of them, then your sugar addiction is severe.

This shows that sugar and sugar addiction does not have to do with your weight or whether or not you are thin or fat; instead, it has to do with your behavior and how you view sugar. Sugar addiction is a behavior issue, not an issue of your weight on the scale.
