The African Fried Chicken: A Delicious Revelation For Health-Conscious Foodies

In the realm of global gastronomy, African cuisine has been a longstanding treasure trove of flavors, holding a mirror to the continent’s rich cultural diversity. The simplicity and wholesomeness of these dishes make them exceptionally endearing, and the African Fried Chicken is a shining example.

Originating from Madagascar, this dish is an ode to the culinary genius of the local populace, who discovered a flavorful way to cook chicken, a universal favorite.

Moreover, this African Fried Chicken is a veritable treat for those following keto or low-carb diets. It has no regular flour or breadcrumbs coating synonymous with the usual fried chicken, significantly reducing its carb content.

Let’s delve deeper into what makes this recipe palatable and incredibly healthy.

Marinating The Chicken: For Taste And Health

Marinating chicken is an age-old practice that serves three primary purposes:

  1. Tenderizing – The acid in the marinade breaks down the muscle fibers making the chicken tender and succulent.
  2. Moisturizing – Helps lock in moisture, ensuring the chicken doesn’t dry out upon cooking.
  3. Flavoring – The meat absorbs the marinade’s flavors, giving every bite a taste.

Marinating takes on even more importance in our African Fried Chicken context. The marinade seeps into the chicken, amplifying its flavor with the boldness of fresh ginger and garlic and the subtle finesse of Pink Himalayan or Kosher salt.

We like adding coconut oil to our marinate, as we find it helps the chicken be more moist.

Chicken Thighs Are Full Of Flavor

This African fried chicken recipe uses chicken thighs; this choice has a good rationale. Savvy chefs often say, “Fat equals flavor,” this wisdom underscores why thighs outshine breasts in this recipe.

Chicken thighs, inherently richer in fat, promise a depth of flavor that surpasses the leaner white meat of chicken breasts.

The Right Salt Makes All The Difference

The choice of salt in this recipe is crucial. The right kind of salt can transform a dish from ordinary to extraordinary. Pink Himalayan or Kosher salt is preferred over regular table salt due to its less pronounced saltiness and many health benefits.

Pink Himalayan salt boasts 84 trace minerals and a softer, palatable taste than regular salt. On the other hand, Kosher salt has a flaky, coarse structure that is perfect for curing meats and seasoning. Pink Himalayan salt, with its healthy trace elements, is the preferred choice for this dish.

Fresh Ginger And Garlic: A Flavorful Health Booster

Fresh ginger and garlic are integral ingredients in our marinade. They are nature’s powerhouses of flavor and nutrition; using them fresh is highly recommended.

Fresh ginger, with its highest concentration of gingerol, is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. It adds a zesty flavor to the chicken while imparting its health benefits.

On the other hand, fresh garlic is superior to its processed counterparts. With a higher concentration of allicin, a beneficial sulfur-containing compound, fresh garlic improves immunity, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and supports heart and brain health.

Coconut Oil: The Healthier Frying Medium

Last but not least, let’s not overlook the frying medium. This recipe calls for coconut oil, a healthier alternative to other oils. It is rich in lauric acid and healthy fats, providing numerous health benefits.

Moreover, it’s odorless and flavorless, protecting the flavors of the chicken while preventing flavor transfer from the oil.

The African Fried Chicken is more than just a delectable dish; it is a testament to the ingenious culinary wisdom of the African continent. This dish exemplifies a culinary tradition that prioritizes health without compromising on flavor.

From the choice of salt, the use of fresh ginger and garlic to the use of coconut oil for frying, every element of this recipe makes it an ideal inclusion in a health-conscious diet and those on a keto regimen, a low-carb meal plan, or simply looking for a healthier version of a classic favorite; for us, this African Fried Chicken ticks all the boxes.

The recipe is simple enough for anyone to prepare, regardless of culinary skills, and exotic enough to impress at any gathering.

The African Fried Chicken recipe is straightforward to prepare and packs a flavor punch that’s second to none. This recipe’s simplicity and nutritious characteristics contribute to its universal appeal, making the African Fried Chicken a true epitome of this culinary prowess. Try this recipe today.

Ingredients

  • 6 Cloves Garlic

  • 2 Tablespoons Ginger

  • 2 Pounds Skinless, Boneless Chicken Thighs

  • 1 Teaspoon Pink Himalayan Salt Or Kosher Salt

  • 3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil for either frying or for marinating with chicken (optional)

Directions

  • Mix 1 Tablespoon coconut oil, garlic, ginger, and salt in a big bowl until they blend harmoniously. Introduce the chicken into the bowl, and using your hands, ensure the aromatic mixture thoroughly coats the chicken. If your schedule permits, cover the bowl and let it sit in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
  • When you’re ready to cook the chicken, place a large cast-iron skillet on medium heat. The skillet is adequately heated when you can only hold your hand around 5 inches above it for a maximum of 2 seconds. Next, introduce the oil and allow it to heat until it is shimmering. Add the chicken to the skillet and cook, turning it occasionally until it takes on a deep brown hue and is thoroughly cooked. This should take about 15 to 20 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent the garlic and ginger from burning.
  • Portion the cooked chicken onto individual plates and serve while it’s still warm
  • Serve with a green salad and other vegetables.

Notes

  • This is a straightforward recipe, but it makes excellent fried chicken and is a healthier alternative to chicken with a lot of breading.
  • We like to add a bit of coconut oil to the meat to marinate the meat together with the oil.
