Walking is usually a better workout choice for many people. Especially if you are overweight or suffer from back joint or knee problems, walking is a better choice than running or other high-impact exercises.

The Many Mental Benefits Of Walking

Walking has also been shown to be good for not just our physical bodies but also our mental bodies. Walking gives you a mental boost that can help you throughout your day.

In a recent study, Stanford University found that walking helped to increase our creativity. When people walked, whether on a treadmill or outdoors, it was found to improve their creativity.

A Stanford University paper entitled Give Your Ideas Some Legs: The Positive Effect of Walking on Creative Thinking said this about walking:

“People have noted that walking seems to have a special relation to creativity. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1889) wrote, “All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking” (Aphorism 34). The current research puts such observations on solid footing. Four studies demonstrate that walking increases creative ideation. The effect is not simply due to the increased perceptual stimulation of moving through an environment, but rather it is due to walking. Whether one is outdoors or on a treadmill, walking improves the generation of novel yet appropriate ideas, and the effect even extends to when people sit down to do their creative work shortly after.”

Stanford University

Stanford researchers discovered that simply walking could increase your creative output by at least 60%. That is a tremendous amount of increase for anyone who is in the creative field of study.

According to the research, one benefit is that walking opens up the free flow of ideas and creativity. In other words, just by going for a walk, you can find that ideas may start to flow.

Anyone who walks, especially if you walk outside, understands one of the effects of walking is that often your mind may wander, and when the mind wanders, you start to see new ideas or a new way to do something.

Besides your creative mindset, walking is also known to help boost your mood. One study found that just 12 minutes of active walking could boost your mood.

If you are feeling down or lacking energy, one of the best things you can do is go for a walk. Walking has been shown to help improve depression and mood issues.

Walking also helps us to improve our brain function. Those that walk can help prevent their brain tissues from deteriorating.

Consistent walking is an excellent exercise for us to do. Walking seven miles is a wonderful exercise that will help you keep and increase your fitness level.

But walking any distance has been shown to help us not only with our fitness goals but also to help us with many of our mental goals. Walking is a great all-around exercise we should do.

So if you’re feeling down, you want to lose weight, or you’re feeling maybe you need a boost, the best thing you can do is to get on your walking shoes and go outside for a walk. You not only feel better, but it also helps stimulate some of your creative juices and gets you out of a mental slump.

Walking is cheap and easy, and almost everyone can do it. It does not matter how fast or slow you go, but you get out the door for a walk.
