Swimming Vs. Walking For Weight Loss

Written By:

Post Date – Update:

If you’re trying to lose weight and enjoy swimming and walking, you may want to know what is better for weight loss. Both exercises can help you get fit and down to your optimal weight.

Most people will burn more calories by swimming than by walking. But whether swimming or walking is better for weight loss comes down to which exercise you will do consistently and which exercise you enjoy. People will tend to stick to an exercise they want more than one they do not like.

Swimming Vs. Walking, Which One Is Better?

Swimming and walking are excellent exercises to help you get in shape and fit; as a general rule, swimming burns more calories than walking.

For example, if you weigh 150 lbs and swim at a moderate pace for 30 minutes, you will burn just over 200 calories; if you can swim at a faster pace or a pace you are training, then you should burn over 330 calories.

But if you are floating around in the water or doing what is known as the stop and go swim you will not burn as many calories. For swimming to be effective, your swimming should also be consistent.

For walking, a person who also weighs 150 lbs at the pace of about 2 miles per hour will burn nearly 95 calories for 30 minutes of walking. If you can up the pace to 3 miles per hour, you will burn 148 calories for 30 minutes.

For a person who is 150 Ibs, hiking will burn over 200 calories for 30 minutes; hiking uphill or backpacking with a backpack could be around 230 calories per hour.

Overall, swimming is considered to burn more calories and be less stressful on your joints as you are in the water, so there is no pressure on your joints as other types of exercise.

Why The Best Exercise Is The OneYou Actually, Do

The best exercise is the one you get out to do. Whether you swim or walk does not matter as much as that you make doing exercise a lifestyle choice.

If you hate swimming or cannot swim, it does not matter how many more calories you can burn swimming than walking, as it is probably an exercise you will not do consistently or long term.

Burning calories is an integral part of the exercise, but it should not be your only consideration when choosing what exercise to do.

Things To Consider When Choosing An Exercise To Do

Here are some things that you should consider when choosing which exercise is proper for you:

  • Choose An Exercise Your Enjoy – Choose an exercise that you enjoy. If you do not enjoy the exercise, chances are it is not something you will consistently do.
  • Choose An Exercise You Will Consistently Do – You want to choose something you will consistently do. The most consistent you are with it, the better you will become and the more you will do the exercise.
  • Choose An Exercise You Can Do – Choose an exercise you can do. If you do not know how to swim, swimming may not be the best exercise for you to do to try to lose weight or burn calories. Choose an exercise you can do.
  • Join A Group Or Friend – We are more likely to keep on going out to exercise if we have someone who we can go with. Find a friend or get a group that you join for exercise – you will be more likely to keep at your exercise.
