0:07
hi this is Anita from Reluctant Low Carb
0:10
Life today we're going to talk a bit
0:12
about why losing weight and getting in
0:14
shape is much more about the mind than
0:17
the body in fact it's really a lot about
0:20
mind games and that might surprise a lot
0:23
of people they think well no it's all
0:24
about the body it's about me getting in
0:26
shape the truth of the matter is it's
0:28
not let's talk first about the power of
0:32
you understanding or knowing why why do
0:36
I want to get in shape why do I want to
0:38
lose weight one of the most important
0:41
exercises that you could do is to embark
0:44
on a weight loss or fitness journey
0:46
sitting down and writing why why do you
0:49
want to lose weight why do you want to
0:51
get in shape what are the deeper reasons
0:54
that drive you this exercise isn't just
0:57
like you know on the surface I want to
0:59
look better i want to look good for my
1:02
cousin's wedding i want to fit into my
1:04
old clothes it's really about digging
1:07
deeper and understanding the motivation
1:10
that keeps you pushing forward when the
1:12
road gets tough because that road is
1:14
going to get tough there's no doubt
1:17
about it it is going to get tough and
1:19
you're going to fall off the wagon
1:22
but you need a reason why to get back
1:26
on here are some reasons you know which
1:29
you could think about i want to lose
1:30
weight so I can play with my kids
1:32
without getting tired i want to get um
1:34
you know lose weight so I feel more
1:36
confident i want to improve my health
1:38
because I don't want to end up with
1:40
chronic illnesses like my parents did i
1:43
want to prove to myself that I can set a
1:45
goal and I can achieve it i want to have
1:48
more energy so I can fully enjoy my life
1:52
you know these are all these are deep
1:53
emotional reasons that can be powerful
1:55
reasons as to why do you want to lose
1:58
weight there's going to be many mental
2:00
barriers to you to losing weight and
2:03
getting in shape if any of you have ever
2:05
had this experience I have it a lot it's
2:07
a morning time you're you know the the
2:10
alarm goes off or it's about ready to go
2:13
off and you know sometimes for me this
2:15
even happens middle of the night i
2:16
didn't really sleep well throughout that
2:18
night i'm thinking like oh you know the
2:20
5:30 alarm comes on really early so I
2:23
turn off my alarm clock and then I end
2:26
up sleeping in i talked myself in the
2:29
middle of the night to doing that and to
2:31
not getting up and doing the exercise I
2:33
needed it that was a mental roadblock
2:37
that came that stopped me from doing
2:40
what I needed to do so there's mental
2:43
barriers that we can have sometimes it's
2:45
our limiting beliefs that you know I
2:47
some people might say I'm just not the
2:49
type to be fit you know just not about
2:51
me just not in my genes just not in my
2:54
genetic so they kind of say you know
2:57
they sort of this self-fulfilling
2:58
prophecy that it's not about them to be
3:01
fit my parents weren't active I'm not
3:03
active it's just the way that I'm built
3:06
it's just the way that I am a fear of
3:09
failure that they're held back by the
3:11
fear of failure you know the idea of
3:12
starting a fitness journey or learning
3:14
something new you know not succeeding
3:17
can sometimes be paralyzing so instead
3:19
of ever embarking on the journey they
3:22
never start in the first place because
3:23
then there's no fear of failure if you
3:25
never start then how do you fail there
3:28
could be emotional eating and healthy
3:29
habits you know for many eating is not
3:32
just about hunger it's about comfort
3:33
it's about stress relief it's about
3:36
emotional coping i know that I do this a
3:38
lot myself that you know you know you're
3:40
emotionally coping you get angry you get
3:41
upset you grab for something that's not
3:43
right so you start having these these
3:45
emotional eating patterns that you know
3:48
are not healthy maybe some of you have
3:50
the sort of all or nothing thinking kind
3:53
of like you know if I'm not perfect at
3:55
it I might as well quit now or one of
3:58
the ones that that I always love well
4:01
I've sort of messed up this week already
4:03
even though it's already only Tuesday i
4:06
might as well just start again next
4:08
Monday and so the rest of the week you
4:10
do nothing because of the fact that
4:13
maybe Monday you didn't do something or
4:14
Tuesday you didn't whatever it is you're
4:16
going to start again on the following
4:18
Monday so sort of this all or nothing
4:21
sort of thinking that you might as well
4:23
not try at all because if you fail once
4:25
in one thing why keep on going another
4:29
one could be lack of patience you know
4:31
it it takes time to lose weight it's not
4:34
an easy thing to do it takes a lot of
4:36
patience and perseverance to be able to
4:38
do it so it could be this entire lack of
4:41
sort of like uh patience that we have so
4:43
what can you do if a lot of this of
4:46
eating is about the mind what is
4:48
something that you can do one is you
4:50
could visualize your future self how do
4:52
I want my future self to look what do I
4:54
want my future to look like you can
4:56
develop this growth mindset where you
4:58
can say instead of seeking seeing
5:01
challenges and roadblocks see them as
5:02
opportunities to grow so many times we
5:05
see challenges as sort of like this is a
5:08
roadblock this is something that's going
5:09
to stop me and I'm just going to stop
5:10
there instead of us seeing this is a
5:13
chance for me to grow this is a chance
5:15
for me to push myself further than I've
5:18
ever been pushed before surround
5:20
yourself with support get yourself
5:22
people that are supportive i've recently
5:24
started a boot camp class and one of the
5:27
classes starts at 5:30 in the morning
5:28
it's hard i mean for me that's hard that
5:31
means I need to be up at you know like
5:33
before 5 or 5:00 need to be there but
5:36
yet I really enjoy the support I get the
5:39
camaraderie I get when I'm there and
5:41
after I've done that for an hour and
5:42
then I'll usually go and go swimming it
5:45
feels good i feel good for the rest of
5:47
the day i feel like wow I really
5:49
accomplished something today i did
5:51
something today you know so surround
5:54
yourself with people that can be
5:55
supportive if you if you do well in
5:58
groups join a group join a class join
6:00
people that will support you maybe set
6:03
some small achievable goals if if you
6:05
know instead of focusing on losing 50
6:07
pounds focus on losing five you know
6:11
instead of committing to intense
6:12
workouts every day start with three
6:14
times a week just focus on something
6:17
small something that you can do practice
6:21
self-compassion you will have setbacks
6:24
like you said there you will go off the
6:26
wagon there are things that are going to
6:27
happen none of us are perfect the key is
6:30
not to let them define you instead of
6:33
beating yourself up treat yourself with
6:35
kindness and refocus on your long-term
6:38
vision say "Here's my long-term vision
6:40
here's where I want to be." And then one
6:44
of the exercises which I did with all of
6:46
this with the roadblocks is I sat down
6:48
and I wrote out here are the things that
6:51
stop me one I didn't sleep well last
6:54
night so I'm too tired to get up and
6:55
exercise today what is something I can
6:58
tell myself that I can do get up get
7:02
your exercise in and then when lunchtime
7:05
comes and you're working take a nap you
7:08
know so there you need to find ways to
7:10
tell yourself to overcome these
7:12
roadblocks that will help you to
7:14
overcome them there's lots of physical
7:16
benefits as we know of all losing weight
7:18
and getting in better shape you know
7:20
you'll have increased energy better
7:22
mobility improved health um enhanced
7:25
mood greater confidence you're going to
7:27
feel better about yourself we all know
7:29
and understand these things but but what
7:31
we need to really understand is this
7:33
connection between our mind and our body
7:36
and our mind telling us things that we
7:39
need to find the ways to overcome those
7:42
roadblocks that stop us from doing them
7:44
so that's why my challenge for you today
7:46
is a couple things one write down your
7:49
why why do you want to improve your
7:51
health lose weight what are your wise
7:54
and make sure you spend time think about
7:56
these things think about really what is
7:58
your why what is the reason why and you
8:01
know don't have it be other people well
8:03
because my husband wants me to lose
8:04
weight or my kids say I need to lose
8:07
weight no it needs to be about you what
8:09
do you want why do you want to do it and
8:13
then after you've done that then start
8:15
writing a list of what are the things
8:17
that stop you from doing it what are
8:20
your roadblocks what are the things that
8:23
will maybe get in your way and then once
8:26
you've written those down look at them
8:27
all and say "What is it that I can tell
8:30
myself to help help me overcome or go
8:33
around these roadblocks or get me out of
8:36
these roadblocks what is it that I can
8:38
do?" For example a roadblock might be
8:41
"Oh I didn't sleep well last night so
8:43
I'm going to turn off the alarm and I'm
8:45
going to sleep in." What is something I
8:48
can say to myself instead of it I will
8:51
get up and I will still exercise and if
8:54
I'm tired I will get to bed earlier in
8:57
the evening or I will be sure to take a
9:00
nap at lunchtime that's a way that you
9:02
can overcome some of those roadblocks or
9:04
your obstacles we've written a blog on
9:07
this if you'd like to have some ideas on
9:09
this but why losing weight and getting
9:11
in shape is more about the mind than the
9:13
body and we'll put a description in our
9:15
blog post below as to the reason why but
9:18
we've hope that you've enjoyed this and
9:20
that this will give you something to
9:21
think about to think about the wise why
9:24
do you want to lose weight why do you
9:26
want to get in shape what are your
9:27
roadblocks and how can you overcome them
9:30
and then that way when those roadblocks
9:33
come you can be better prepared to learn
9:35
to overcome them thank you so much for

listening we hope you'll press the
